Plant Science Student Conference in Halle an der Saale

PhD students from all over Germany will come together at the IPB from 17-20 June 2024 for the Plant Science Student Conference (PSSC). The event has already become a tradition, as it has been held for 20 years, alternating between the IPB and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) in Gatersleben. As a pure student conference, the event is not only aimed exclusively at doctoral students, it is also organized and carried out completely by the young scientists. The planning of lectures and poster presentations, catering and the search for sponsors as well as the cultural program are therefore once again the responsibility of the IPB doctoral students. Around 100 young plant researchers from the two Leibniz Institutes, the University of Halle, the CEPLAS Cluster of Excellence for Plant Sciences, and other similarly oriented institutions are expected to attend.

This year's theme is all about the diverse interactions that plants have with their environment. This includes, for example, the development of resistance strategies against pathogens, drought, nutrient deficiency and many other environmental factors that constantly challenge plants and force them to adapt. In line with this thematic framework, participants will have the opportunity to present their latest research findings in presentations or on scientific posters in smaller discussion groups. The best papers and presentations will be awarded by a jury. The program is rounded off by three guest lectures from established scientists and interesting workshops on topics of science communication, such as scientific storytelling

The organizers receive financial support from life science companies, as well as from the city of Halle, and the IPB itself. "Hosting a scientific conference requires a deep understanding of the subject matter, organizational talent and great commitment," emphasizes IPB Managing Director Professor Alain Tissier. "It credits our students that they take on this additional work with great enthusiasm. That's why we support this project with full conviction."

On the Social Day, participants can find out that the city of Halle is not only a worthwhile destination from a scientific point of view, but also in general. A visit to the Hallorenfabrik and a guided tour of the city, including the Meckel Collections, are planned. This year's Plant Science Student Conference will once again offer young plant scientists great opportunities to present their work, network, learn about new methods and issues and look beyond their own horizons. "All this in front of an audience of like-minded people and in a relaxed atmosphere," says Jolina Marx, who has been involved in the IPB organization team for many weeks. "That's what makes this conference so successful and popular."
