Enzyme biotechnology aims to improve challenging chemical processes by the application of “green” biocatalysts. Focus of our research is the identification of novel enzymes and their optimization (See methodology ) for improved properties (e.g. regio- and product specificity). These tailored biocatalysts are subsequently applied as part of cascading reactions or cell-bound biosynthetic pathways to synthesize predominantly plant natural products with limited availability (e.g., isoprenoids and phenylpropanoids ).
