PhD Get-Together on Science Communication

PhD Get-Together on Science Communication

Workshop on Science Communication at the 3rd PhD Summer Get-Together.

Doctoral researchers from the natural, agricultural and nutritional sciences met in Halle for the 3rd PhD Summer Get-Together on June 15. Ten structured PhD programs, including IPB’s Leibniz Research School PlantBioChem, had invited their members to the networking event. This year, the meeting took place at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) and featured a two-and-a-half-hour science communication workshop. Communication experts Volker Hahn from iDiv and Tom Leonhardt from MLU readily shared with the 70 participants what it means to make one's own research known beyond the scientific community. Questions such as "Who do I want to reach with my science communication?", "What do I want to achieve with it?" and "What channels can I use to do this?" generated lively exchanges in mixed discussion groups. After the workshop, the attendants could continue connecting at a barbecue in a relaxed atmosphere. All in all, it was a successful event offering doctoral students valuable input and networking opportunities.

The Research School Network Halle, which acted as organizer of the Get-Together is a network of coordinators of doctoral programs in natural, agricultural and nutritional sciences affiliated with MLU. The International Graduate Academy of MLU (InGrA) supports the network. Their joint activities aim to exploit synergies in the organization of courses and events for doctoral students and to promote cross-disciplinary networking among young scientists on campus.
