After completing the scientific evaluation of the IPB, the Leibniz Association Senate has recommended the continued funding of the institute for a period of another seven years. In its statement of March 18, 2021, the Senate again emphasizes the IPB's unique selling point, the combination of basic molecular plant biology and application-oriented bioorganic chemistry. The interdisciplinary work at the institute enables sustainable crop production and the development of innovative biotechnologies and syntheses of bioactives in the long term. In view of the serious effects of climate change on agriculture, this research work is highly relevant to society, the Senate emphasizes. The evaluation committee attests to the IPB's excellent development since the last evaluation in 2013 and welcomes the institute's strategy to interlink its chemical and biological expertise even more closely in the future. This is to be achieved by establishing and expanding technological, bioinformatics and information science infrastructures.

Leibniz Institutes are subjected to a transparent and independent review process with a regular external evaluation at least every seven years, in which internationally recognized experts assess the performance and structures of each institution. Based on this quality control, the Senate of the Leibniz Association adopts a science policy statement with a recommendation for further funding of the evaluated Leibniz institution. This Senate statement is used by the Joint Science Conference of the Federal and State Governments (GWK) to decide on the eligibility for funding.
