8th Leibniz Plant Biochemistry Symposium: Successful commemoration of Dierk Scheel

The commemoration of our former Managing Director Prof. Dierk Scheel could not have been more beautiful. Numerous scientists from all over the world, including many former colleagues, friends and companions of the great plant scientist came to the Leopoldina on May 8 and 9 for the 8th Leibniz Plant Biochemistry Symposium to discuss the latest discoveries in plant resilience. The program was excellent. The lectures highlighted many aspects of pathogen defense, starting with receptor biology (Thorsten Nürnberger) and bacterial virulence factors (Stefanie Ranf-Zipproth) to diverse signaling cascades of plant immunity (Cyril Zipfel and Heribert Hirt) to manipulation strategies of bacteria (Ulla Bonas) and the corresponding counter-reactions on the plant side (Sophien Kamoun). This round of pathogen defense was completed with other fascinating topics on resilience, such as symbiotic interactions with fungi (Martin Parniske), composition of plant microbiome (Paul Schulze-Lefert), metabolomics and bioactive compounds (Nicole van Dam and Axel Brakhage) and plant resistance to heavy metals (Stephan Clemens). Interwoven into the scientific discourse were memories of shared experiences, insights and bon mots from Dierk Scheel, who had also been a friend and mentor to all the speakers. The symposium was well attended by more than 150 guests and was a great success overall.
