Project Group Isoprenoids
The isoprenoids with terpenoids, steroids and polyisoprenes form a group of complex natural products which are biosynthesized from simple precursors, the isoprenyl diphosphates. The interest of our group is enzyme-mediated prenylation, which transforms natural but also synthetic isoprenyl diphosphates into terpenes (e.g. fragrants found in essential oils) by cyclization (terpene cyclases) or into rubber precursors by chain elongation (cis-prenyltransferases, see Figure). Furthermore, we focus on the transfer of isoprenyl moieties to phenolics (aromatic prenyltransferases). The identification and biocatalytic application of such enzymes (see methodology ) is complemented by the desire to understand the mechanisms of biological catalysis by computational methods, use of enzyme variants (mutations) (with PGs “Modeling” and “Phenylpropanoids ”), and indicator substrates (with AGs Bioactives and Biofunctional Synthesis).
