The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020 was awarded to the two scientists Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna for the discovery of CRISPR/Cas9. Using this genetic mechanism, they developed a revolutionary method that enables precise, fast and cost-effective genomediting of plants, animals and microorganisms.
With this genetic tool, the dream of therapies for diseases that were previously difficult or incurable is now within reach. The development of resistant crops is also thriving thanks to CRISPR/Cas9. Among the Nobel Prize Laureates in chemistry, only 7 of 185 are female.
