70 years ago, in May 1949, the basic constitution of Germany was passed. Article 5, paragraph 3 states that freedom of science is a fundamental right: "Art and sciences, research and teaching shall be free".

On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the Alliance of Science Organisations has published a memorandum, that formulates a voluntary commitment in the form of "Ten Theses on Freedom of Science" and calls on the state and society to guarantee the appropriate framework conditions.

The memorandum is part of a campaign with the motto "Freedom is our system. Together for Science. 70 years of the basic constitution". In addition to the Leibniz Association, nine other important German science organizations are members of the Alliance. As part of the campaign, numerous events were carried out and combined with digital formats such as a podcast, video interviews and many other contributions on the website WISSENSCHAFTSFREIHEIT.de (available in German only).
