From Molecule To Society is the title of the first international Bioeconomy Conference that takes place on 6th and 7th of June in Halle. The conference will be arranged by the ScienceCampus Halle, an initiative of the Leibniz Association, of which the IPB was a leading co-founder. Thus, the meeting is fully reflecting one of the most important topics of the regional plant research – the plant-based bioeconomy.
Excellent scientists from various fields of the international bioeconomy research will give talks during the two-day meeting. Among them are Prof. Dr. Klaus Ammann (Prof. Em. University of Bern), Prof. Dr. Hesham A. El Enshasy (Institute of Bioproduct Development, Malaysia), Prof. Dr. Christoph Syldatke (Karlsruher Institut of Technology (KIT)), Prof. Dr. Sabine L. Flitsch (Manchester Institute of Biotechnology & School of Chemistry), Prof. Dr. David B. Zilberman (University of Berkeley) and Dr. Stephan Schleissing (Institute Technology – Theology – Natural Sciences at the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich).
The opening of the conference will take place on Thursday (6th of June) with greetings given by representatives of politics and science. Among others, Dr. Claudia Herok (Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Department of Bioeconomy) and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Joachim von Braun (Center for Development Research at the University of Bonn and Chairman of the German Bioeconomy Council) will give some welcome addresses.
The program will be rounded off on Friday (7th of June) by a guided tour of all participants through the Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes (CBP) in Leuna.

The ScienceCampus Halle and Bioeconomy:
The ScienceCampus are an initiative of the Leibniz Association to promote the interdisciplinary networking of university and non-university research. Today, there exist five ScienceCampus in Germany dealing with different fields of research.
The ScienceCampus Halle – Plant-based Bioeconomy was founded in March 2011. In addition to the IPK Gatersleben, the IAMO and the Natural Science Faculties I and III of the MLU, the IPB was one of the founding members. Furthermore, since October 2011 the independent IPB research group Protein Recognition and Degradation under the leadership of Dr. Nico Dissmeyer is an official junior research group if the ScienceCampus Halle.
The plant-based bioeconomy is one of the most important industries in the 21st century. Given the continuously increasing global population with the simultaneous decrease of agricultural land and fossil energy sources, the mankind is facing today a change in dealing with nature. Biological resources must be used in a more responsible and sustainable way. Bioeconomy offers new conditions for facing the social challenges of our time through biotechnological research and resulting innovations.
