Glucagon and Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptors: Promising Therapeutic Targets

Hidayat Hussain, guest researcher at IPB, together with partners from Oman, has published a review article on the structural diversity of glucagon and glucagon-like protein (GLP)-1 receptors and their signaling pathways. Both receptors play a major role in the maintenance of normal glucose levels in the blood. The authors shed light on site-directed mutations at the receptors and their significance in drug discovery against type-2 diabetes. According to the authors, the use of various agonists and antagonists allowed first insights into the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of the receptors. A better understanding of SAR is required to develop new therapeutic approaches for the diabetes treatment.
