Recent advances in genome editing as well as cloning and genetic engineering make it feasible to perform large-scale changes, enabling entire biosynthetic pathways to be moved between systems and opening up new horizons in medicine and agriculture biotech.
From April 16-18, 2018, the "Crossing Kingdoms" symposium taking place at The Sainsbury Laboratory - University of Cambridge, UK, will bring together leaders in the field of synthetic biology. Researchers with microbial, animal and plant background will highlight how knowledge from these different life forms provides tools for synthetic biology innovations and applications.
In addition to plenary talks and discussions, there will be a number of workshops around key emerging areas of synthetic biology, with contributions from key leading scientists in the field as well as industry. Alain Tissier, department chair at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) is organizing the international 3-day event together with Phil Wigge from the University of Cambridge in frame of their joint ERA-SynBio project. Tissier describes the symposium as "a great opportunity to present your results to the SynBio community".
