New dTALE system for the co-expression of genes in rice
The targeted co-expression of multiple transgenes in plants often fails due to the limited availability of promoter sequences that are active only in specific tissues or at specific developmental stages. As part of an international team, IPB scientists have found a solution using TALE expression systems. The study is part of the C4 Rice Project to develop new high-yielding rice varieties. Stress-resistant wheat - postulated enzyme activity refuted
In 2014, a team of Chinese researchers investigated the increased salt tolerance of a wheat variety. They identified a protein variant specific to this variety as poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) as the cause. IPB scientists and partners from the FU Berlin reviewed the study and came to different conclusions. Published in The Plant Cell // >> Read more

Latest findings on Phospho-immuno cascades
Scientists of the Department Biochemistry of Plant Interactions have recently published a review article on the complex dynamics of signaling pathways in the plant immune response. In line with their expertise, they focused on the universal cellular regulatory mechanisms of phosphorylation, which also play a key role in the control of plant immunity. Piperine biosynthesis: all in one place
In recent years, IPB scientists have successfully elucidated the biosynthesis of the pepper alkaloid piperine. The final step of this synthesis is catalyzed by piperine synthase. Now the scientists could show that the biosynthesis site of piperine is also its final storage site. Both the enzyme and its product piperine accumulate in the unripe fruit. Special issue in honor of Prof. Wessjohann's 60th birthday
The International Journal of Molecular Sciences recently published a special issue on the occasion of Prof. Wessjohann's 60th birthday. At the time of the anniversary last year, editor of the special issue and visiting scientist at IPB, Hidayat Hussain, had called for submissions. Research teams from across the globe followed the prompt and in total submitted 16 research articles on the topic of "Natural Products in Modern Drug Discovery" - the topic that also dominates Prof. Wessjohann's scientific work. Long Night of Sciences: IPB is a magnet on campus
Despite a two-year Corona break, this year's Long Night of Science was, as usual, very well attended. This was the case even though we did not offer an experimental and quiz program on July 1, 2022, which usually attracts legions of interested people. Instead, there was an exciting lecture program on plant science, but this did not dampen the flow of visitors. Our guests came, watched and listened to the excellent lectures. >> Read more
