Glandular trichomes: micro‐organs with model status?

Glandular trichomes are epidermal outgrowths that are the site of biosynthesis and storage of large quantities of specialized metabolites. Together with Robert Schuurink from the University of Amsterdam, IPB’s Alain Tissier recently published a review on glandular trichomes in New Phytologist. Schuurink and Tissier review which novel concepts investigations on glandular trichomes have brought to the field of specialized metabolism, which challenges and open questions in the field lie ahead. Furthermore, they discuss exciting possibilities for future research on glandular trichomes also with regard to the new possibilities of gene editing.
