Out of curiosity about the unknown

Kurt Mothes, Photo: IPB

Prof. Dr. Kurt Mothes (1900-1983), the founding director of the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and XXII President of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, was not only an outstanding scientist of his time, but also an outstanding photographer. Now the Leopoldina archive has restored several pictures from the Mothes estate and compiled them for an exhibition that was to open in June 2020 in the city archive of Plauen. The exhibition shows pictures taken by the young traveller Kurt Mothes on his numerous excursions in the 1920s and 1930s. Unfortunately, due to the Corona pandemic, the exhibition opening in Mothes' birth town had to be postponed to 2021, but there is already a digital preview that raises a lot of curiosity. In their virtual exhibition preview, the Leopoldina Archive and the Plauen City Archive present magnificent Mothes photographs from all over Europe, including excursion pictures from the Wandervogel movement, city scenes and portraits of people and country.
