A fixed date in the calendar of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) users in German-speaking countries is the meeting "Practical Problems of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy". This year for the first time, the IPB in Halle had the privilege of hosting the expert meeting. From March 19-20, 2019, the NMR experts met to discuss techniques and challenges in NMR. In addition to presentations on various topics, ranging from methods to data management, there were tutorials and workshops. Those dealt with software and the latest generation of specialized devices. For example, there was a demo for a benchtop NMR device, which is extremely compact compared to the usual devices.

IPB Research Group Leader Andrea Porzel had taken over the local organization and was pleased about a well-attended conference: "We welcomed around 90 scientists from the academic as well as the industrial sector. And of course people within the community know one another - it's a kind of family reunion." The next meeting in March 2020 will take place in Berlin at the Technical University.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) uses a certain property of atomic nuclei, the angular momentum or spin. In a strong magnetic field, the spin is fixed in one state and then excited by radio waves. Depending on how the spin state of the atomic nucleus reacts to this excitation, the researchers can draw conclusions about its environment, for example, neighboring atomic nuclei. Thus, molecular structures composed of many atoms can be elucidated by NMR.
