Plant cell and molecular biology, plant development

Two DFG-funded three-year-PhD positions in plant cell and molecular biology, plant development and plant biochemistry are available in the research group ‘Cellular Coordination’ at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry, Halle (Saale), Germany, Department Molecular Signal Processing.

Calcium signaling plays an important role for cytoskeleton organization in all eukaryotes. In our group, we identified IQ67 DOMAIN proteins as plant-specific microtubule associated proteins, which link calcium calmodulin signaling and the cytoskeleton in plants. Ongoing research in our group aims to functionally characterize select IQD family members of the reference plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The Ph.D. candidates will pursue two separate but complementary approaches:

  • Biological role and cellular dynamics of IQDs during root development
  • Biochemical characterization of select IQDs, identification of additional interactors and molecular mechanisms of IQD function in cellular signaling networks

We are looking for enthusiastic PhD students with strong interests in plant development. Applicants should have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in biology or biochemistry and a strong background in cell and molecular biology or biochemistry. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. Successful candidates must have a strong commitment to cooperate and the ability to work independently. Willingness to work abroad for a period of few month during the Ph.D. project is a plus.
